USTA Heart of America executive director hosts adaptive tennis workshop at RayPec School District

Sydney Hamilton | March 26, 2024

USTA Heart of America Executive Director Rebecca Falkner Axelrod helped lead an adaptive tennis workshop for students in the Raymore-Peculiar School District in Peculiar, Mo., a suburb south of Kansas City, on March 11.

During the workshop, Falkner Axelrod showcased adaptive tennis skills to help inspire the students who otherwise might not be exposed to the sport of tennis.

“It’s important to offer training like this because we are all about developing and promoting the game of tennis as well as growing it,” Falkner Axelrod said. “So being able to do tennis in the school system—where tennis may not be offered previously—it’s just introducing more students to the game.”

The students were intrigued by the wheelchair Falkner Axelrod brought with her that’s typically used for wheelchair tennis. They particularly enjoyed learning more about how adaptive tennis is played and how fun the sport can be. It’s safe to say the teachers were equally intrigued, too!

“It was also cool to see PE teachers ask about adaptive and wheelchair (tennis) and how they can meet their students' needs,” Falkner Axelrod said.
