Junior Team Events

The USTA holds several team tournaments for junior players, including the Battle of the Sections, the Northeast Intersectionals and the Unity Cup. Below, learn more about how USTA Eastern athletes can participate in these events.

**Earning points in team events: Players earn points based on individual wins in accordance with their position. Even if a team does not advance in the draw, players receive points for any singles and doubles matches won.

Team Intersectional Showdown  (L4)

This closed Level 4 team event is for players in the USTA Eastern, Southern, Southern California and Texas sections only. 

2024 Information

This year's event will be held July 26-28. Six boys and six girls from each section will be selected according to the National Standings list published on June 26 for a total of 24 boys and 24 girls. The players will then be waterfalled onto two teams of equal strength per section using the most recent ITF World Tennis Number. USTA Eastern will host the boys' and girls' 12s tournament, USTA Texas will host the boys' and girls' 14s tournament, USTA Southern will host the boys' and girls' 16s tournament and USTA Southern California hosting the boys' and girls' 18s tournament.

Northeast Intersectionals  (L2)

This closed Level 2 team event is for players in the USTA Eastern, Mid-Atlantic, Middle States and New England sections only. Players register as individuals and are waterfalled onto teams with teammates from each of the four participating sections. The event for boys' and girls' 12s, 14s and 16s will be held annually in late July and the event for boys' and girls' 16s and 18s will be held annually in December.

2024 Information

This year's first Northeast Intersectional will be held July 26-28, with USTA New England hosting the boys' and girls' 12s tournament, USTA Eastern hosting the boys' and girls' 14s tournament and USTA Middle States hosting the boys' and girls' 16s tournament. USTA Mid-Atlantic will host the event for boys' and girls' 18s in December.

Battle of the Sections  (L1)

“The Battle of the Sections” Level 1 Team Championship—for boys' and girls' 16s and 18s—is scheduled to return July 29-Aug. 1 (boys') and July 30-Aug. 2 (girls') in Kalamazoo, Michigan (boys') and Claremont, California (girls') in the lead-up to the USTA National Championships. Each USTA section will send boys' and girls' teams composed of eight players: four 16-and-under players and four 18-and-under players. Together, these eight players will play as one team and participate in four singles and four doubles matches over the course of the tournament. The Eastern Section will designate coaches for the boys' and girls' teams.

2023 Information

The June 28th USTA National Combined Standing List will be used for selection. The three highest-ranked players in each division (boys' 16s, girls' 16s, boys' 18s, girls' 18s) who register will be selected to compete. You must register to be considered. The fourth spot in each division will be determined by the “all factors method”, which considers all reasonably available information, including ranking lists, ratings, standing lists, recent records, types of surface, and head-to-head encounters.

Unity Cup  (L4)

This is a closed Level 4 team event for players from the Eastern section only. Players register as individuals and are waterfalled onto teams. The Unity Cup is held annually in late August.

2023 Information

The event will be limited to 16 boys and 16 girls. Each of the four teams will include eight players (four boys, four girls). The round robin format allows players to play up to three singles and three doubles matches. If draws are not full, we will maximize match play with the numbers we have.

Other USTA Eastern Team Events

Dominant Duos (L5, L6, L7) 

A Dominant Duo is a 2-player team tournament. Players register with a partner and play through the draw as a team, with both competing in a singles match and a doubles match. Participants earn points based on individual wins.

College Format

The College Format is similar to how college players compete. Players register as individuals and are placed on teams. Teams are created by waterfalling players using the National Standing List or World Tennis Number (WTN). Each player plays one singles match and one doubles match. The team that wins two out of the three doubles matches wins the doubles point, while each singles win earns one singles point. Whichever team wins 4 out of 7 points advances. The exact team distribution will be determined by the number of registrants. Events will require at least 12 players to register.
