U.S. Davis Cup team to meet Ukraine in 2024 qualifying round
The United States Davis Cup team learned its next assignment on Sunday when the draw for the 2024 Qualifiers was revealed. In their quest for a record-extending 33rd Davis Cup crown, the U.S. will play Ukraine in an away tie from February 2-4, at a location to be announced.
The meeting will come less than two years after the U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team welcomed Ukraine to Asheville, N.C., in April 2022—a tie the Americans won 3-2.
Seeded 11th for the Davis Cup Qualifiers, the U.S. must win the tie to secure their place at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, to be played in September and November. The U.S. reached the group stage in the 2023 Davis Cup Finals but fell short of the knockout rounds after posting a 1-2 record in Split, Croatia.
Bob Bryan, who was named U.S. captain in March 2023, made his debut in the full-time role at the 2023 Finals. He selected Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Mackenzie McDonald, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram to compete in Croatia and began his tenure with a 2-1 victory against the host nation.
Now preparing for his first full year at the helm, Bryan will be eager to help his nation win its first Davis Cup title since he triumphed as a player in 2007. He will have a strong group of American players to consider for his squad, with seven U.S. men in the year-end singles Top 50 in addition to doubles world No. 1 Krajicek and No. 6 Ram.
The 12 winning nations in the 2024 Qualifiers will advance to the Finals, where they will be joined by 2023 champions Italy, 2023 finalists Australia, and wild cards Spain and Great Britain.
The 24 nations competing in next year's Qualifiers were drawn as follows (host nation listed first):
Canada vs. South Korea
Serbia vs. Slovakia
Croatia vs. Belgium
Netherlands vs. Switzerland
Czech Republic vs. Israel
Ukraine vs. United States
Finland vs. Portugal
Chinese Taipei vs. France
Argentina vs. Kazakhstan
Sweden vs. Brazil
Chile vs. Peru
