Patrick Kypson wins Champaign Challenger on USTA Pro Circuit
Patrick Kypson closed the 2023 USTA Pro Circuit calendar by winning the biggest title of his career at the Challenger 75 event in Champaign, Ill. The 24-year-old beat Alex Michelsen, 6-4, 6-3, on Sunday in an all-American final to claim his fifth ITF singles title and his second Challenger crown of the season.
The result moved Kypson into the ATP's Top 200 for the first time at world No. 192 and also earned him a second place finish in the USTA's Australian Open Wild Card Challenge, behind Michelsen. With Michelsen currently ranked world No. 94, inside the projected cutoff for direct entry into the Australian Open, the men's wild card on offer for the Melbourne major could fall to Kypson.
Kypson has made two previous Grand Slam main-draw appearances: at the 2017 US Open and this year at Roland Garros, via a wild card he earned by winning the USTA's Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge.
Kypson and Michelsen were among six American to reach at least the quarterfinals in Champaign. Kypson defeated Ethan Quinn, 6-4, 6-2, in the semis while Martin Damm, Aleks Kovacevic and Mitchell Krueger all bowed out in the quarters. In the doubles event, American Lucas Horve finished runner-up with Great Britain's Oliver Okonkwo.
The Champaign event was the biggest of four men's USTA Pro Circuit events last week. Learner Tien won the M25 singles title in Columbus, Ohio, where Robert Cash reached the singles semis and won the doubles event with Bryce Nakashima. Ozan Baris beat Samir Banerjee in an all-American singles final at the M15 in East Lansing, Mich., where William Grant and Eliot Spizziri completed an all-U.S. semifinal lineup. Alafia Ayeni won the East Lansing doubles crown with Great Britain's Matthew Rankin.
Rounding out the men's Pro Circuit action on home soil, Garrett Johns reached the singles final and Victor Lilov advanced to the semis at the M15 in Boca Raton, Fla.
In last week's lone women's Pro Circuit event, a W25 in Austin, Texas, Hanna Chang reached the singles final and Ashley Lahey won the doubles title with Maria Kozyreva.
