Tennis Tradition Thrives in the Cantu-Morales Family
For the Cantu-Morales family, tennis is more than just a game; it’s a way of life that fills their home and hearts. From the moment you step inside, the unmistakable sounds of the sport echo throughout, whether it’s the television tuned to the Tennis Channel or the clatter of a stringing machine repurposed as a coffee table.
Bobbie Cantu reflects on her upbringing, saying, "Tennis has always been a constant celebration in our family. There’s never a dull moment when the game is on." This vibrant atmosphere is largely thanks to her father, Juan Morales, who grew up in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). He first picked up a racquet as a child, developing a passion that would shape his life. Juan played tennis at the collegiate level and has spent over 25 years coaching players of all ages, sharing his love for the sport with everyone he encounters.
Juan’s dedication extends beyond mere instruction; he fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among his students. "He always tells us that tennis is about more than just winning—it's about the friendships you build and the lessons you learn," Bobbie says. Inspired by her father’s enthusiasm, both Bobbie and her brother, 16-year-old Brandon, have taken to the courts, embracing what the family humorously dubs the “tennis curse.”
For Brandon, tennis is both a passion and a source of bonding with his father. "It’s something we can do together," he shares. "Whenever I’m on the court, I feel connected to him." Together, they're creating lasting memories filled with laughter and competition.
As they gather for matches or simply to watch their favorite players compete, they revel in the shared joy of tennis. It’s not just a sport for them; it’s a celebration of family, dedication, and love. With each swing of the racquet, they continue to carry forward a legacy that Juan has lovingly built—a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
