U.S. women win Margaret Court Cup at 2024 ITF Masters World Team Championships

November 22, 2024

The women representing the United States at the 45+ ITF Masters Tour World Team Championships won the Margaret Court Cup at the Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo, Japan. The win marked the first cup for an under-50 American team in 10 years. The men’s and women’s 45’s team won the Dubler Cup and Margaret Court Cup, respectively, in 2014.

The final was a tough back and forth battle against Germany, but in the end the American women, Hiromi Sasano, Francesca La O and Julia Dimitrov, led by captain Julie Thu, were just too strong as they came away with a 2-0 victory.

The tournament is the equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, with top American tennis players representing their country in the 45-and-over age group.

Seeded fourth overall, the Americans got through the group stage fairly easily with two 3-0 wins over Denmark and Norway, dropping only 19 games in pool play. The U.S. team then defeated South Korea in the quarterfinals and host country Japan in the semifinals to set up the final showdown with Germany.

The men’s team finished 15th after beating South Africa and Estonia in the playoffs. They had previously lost to Great Britain and Czech Republic in the group stage.

Following the ITF Masters World Team Championships, the individual championships will be held from Nov. 23-30 at the same site.
