U.S. Billie Jean King Cup team to face Belgium in 2024 qualifying round

Haley Fuller | November 27, 2023

Billie Jean King Cup 2023 wrapped up for the year just two weeks ago, but it’s time to start gearing up and getting excited for the U.S. to face Belgium in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers with a home-court advantage.

In the official draw for next year’s Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge competition, which was held Sunday before the Davis Cup final, the fourth-seeded Americans were drawn against Belgium for the 2024 BJK Cup Qualifiers—the first round of play for 16 of the 20 countries who are eligible to play for the World Cup of Tennis next year.

It will be the first meeting between the two countries in Billie Jean King Cup play since 2011, when Belgium won the tie, 4-1. The U.S. will be hoping to secure a record-extending 19th BJK Cup title with new coach Lindsay Davenport.

The U.S. is 5-2 all-time against Belgium in Billie Jean King Cup play dating back to the first meeting between the two countries in 1990. The Belgians handily won the last two meetings in 2011 and 2007, 4-1 and 5-0, respectively.

The 16 nations competing in next year's Qualifiers were drawn as follows, with the host nation listed first:

Australia vs. Mexico

Switzerland vs. Poland

France vs. Great Britain

U.S. vs. Belgium

Japan vs. Kazakhstan

Brazil vs. Germany

Slovakia vs. Slovenia

Ukraine vs. Romania

For the fourth straight year, each year since the event’s transition to a qualifying and single-site Finals format, the U.S. was awarded hosting rights for the qualifying round. The location for the tie will be announced in the coming months.

The nations that finished in fourth through 12th place at the 2023 Finals, and the eight winners of the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs that took place two weeks ago, will play in eight traditional home-and-away ties the weekend of April 12-13, 2024. The winners of each tie will advance to the 2024 BJK Cup Finals in Seville, Spain next November. The field will be rounded out by 2023 BJK Cup champions Canada, 2023 runners-up Italy, the host country of Spain, and wild card Czech Republic.

The U.S. went 1-1 in the group stage of this year’s Finals in Seville, beating Switzerland but losing to the Czech Republic in a winner-take-all tie that decided a semifinal berth. The team earned its seed as the fourth-highest ranked team (No. 8) among the countries in the draw behind Australia, Switzerland and France.
