Pegula to lead 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals team with Collins, Dolehide, Townsend and Stearns

Victoria Chiesa | September 16, 2024

US Open finalist Jessica Pegula will lead captain Lindsay Davenport's team at November's Billie Jean King Cup Finals, a team which will also include Danielle Collins, Caroline Dolehide, Taylor Townsend and Peyton Stearns.

The 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals will be played in Malaga, Spain at the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena Arena from Nov. 13-20, and for the first time, be held concurrently with the Davis Cup Finals at the same venue. The U.S. has also qualified for the Davis Cup Finals, which will be held from Nov. 19-24.

The Billie Jean King Cup Finals format is a 12-nation, knockout-style bracket, where each tie will be a best-of-three competition with two singles matches and one doubles match. The U.S. will play Slovakia in the first round on Nov. 14, with the winner advancing to play Australia in the quarterfinals.

The U.S. is the competition's all-time leader with 18 Billie Jean King Cup titles and will hope to add a record-extending crown this year, and a first since 2017, with its team with two Top 10 singles players and two Top 15 doubles players.

Pegula played an integral part in getting the U.S. into this year's Finals, as she went 2-0 in April's qualifying round victory over Belgium. Since then, she has risen to the No. 1-ranked American position as the world No. 3 on the back of her first Grand Slam final at the US Open. There, Pegula broke an 0-6 streak in Grand Slam quarterfinals win a win over world No. 1 Iga Swiatek before eventually finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka.

Pegula is, in fact, 5-1 all-time in singles in Billie Jean King Cup play and 1-1 in doubles, and has helped clinch the Americans' spot in the Finals in each of the last three years.

Joining her is current world No. 10 Danielle Collins, who is completing her final year on tour this fall. The 2022 Australian Open finalist is 7-1 all-time in Billie Jean King Cup singles matches, including a 2-0 record in last year’s Finals, and has competed in the Finals in each of the last three years.

The U.S. doubles efforts will likely be led by the combination of Dolehide and Townsend, each of whom achieved a milestone on the doubles court this year. Townsend partnered with Czech Katerina Siniakova to win her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, and also reached the mixed doubles final at the US Open with Donald Young, while Dolehide and fellow American Desirae Krawczyk won the WTA 1000 title in Toronto together.

Rounding out the group is Stearns, who earned her first Billie Jean King Cup team call-up at last year's Finals but did not play. The former NCAA individual champion won her first career WTA singles title earlier this year, and also reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Toronto. At Grand Slam level, she reached the third round at both Roland Garros and the US Open.
