Re-engage and re-energize with Cardio Tennis

The pandemic has changed our world in so many ways—and tennis has benefited with an influx of new players. Now, it’s up to us as an industry to retain those new players and continue to attract new ones. One of the best programming options you can use to meet this need is Cardio Tennis.

Cardio Tennis is a high-energy fitness workout that combines the best features of tennis with cardiovascular exercise, delivering a full-body, calorie-burning workout in a fun, social setting. Launched in 2005 at the US Open, it has shown continuous and significant year-over-year growth, now with more than 2.5 million participants in the U.S.

Since its inception, nearly 3,000 tennis facilities in the U.S. have included the program in their tennis offerings—and it’s even appeared on NBC's hit reality TV show, “The Biggest Loser.”

I’ve been involved in Cardio Tennis since it was created, serving as the Global Education Director and helping to make it part of the tennis culture throughout the world. And I’m happy now to continue my involvement helping to promote and expand Cardio Tennis, as the program is now managed by the USTA.

Cardio Tennis is successful because it checks the boxes on many fitness trends: being a group experience, offering high-intensity training, offering exercise and weight loss and using technology. In fact, Cardio Tennis has been a leader in “wearable technology” from the outset, using heart-rate monitors during sessions so players stay within their optimum training zones.

Today’s consumer is looking for a safe, engaging, fun and effective workout. As an industry, we can provide those needs with Cardio Tennis programming. The scope of Cardio Tennis is much broader than just the 60-minute workout: there is also the Triples event, Games Competition and more. These are inclusive social events that are fast-paced, fun and, yes, a bit competitive. Plus, players of all ability and fitness levels can play together.

To re-enage the industry with Cardio Tennis, we're starting with a “Hit to be Fit” tour in July in the greater Chicago area. This will include two Cardio Tennis training courses for instructors and eight consumer activations, including the multi-court Cardio Tennis experience, Triples events and Cardio Tennis with suspension training.
