NCAA Championships canceled, Tennis Channel/USTA Top 25 halted

Arthur Kapetanakis | March 13, 2020

The NCAA announced the cancellation of all winter and spring championships on Thursday, inlcuding all men's and women's tennis championships, due to COVID-19 concerns.

While the NCAA edict does not apply to regular season play, all Division I conferences have either suspended or canceled spring sports. Most notably, the Big Ten and the Ivy League have canceled all athletics for the remainder of the academic year.

As a result of this, the Tennis Channel/USTA College Tennis Top 25 will be halted for this season. The Week 7 rankings, which listed the USC men and the UNC women as unanimous No. 1s,  will serve as the final edition for 2020.

The full NCAA statement reads as follows:

"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

After the 2019 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships were held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., for the first time, the 2020 Division I tournament was scheduled to be hosted by Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. For 2021, the event is set to return to the National Campus.
