International Tennis Hall of Fame heralds new era of professional tennis in Newport

Arthur Kapetanakis | July 18, 2024

The 2025 season will mark a new era of professional tennis at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. Beginning next summer, the iconic venue will be the host of a joint ATP Challenger 125 and WTA 125 event for a revamped Hall of Fame Open.

The new event will become the first combined men's and women's 125-level event in the United States. Just like at the US Open, equal prize money will be awarded to competitors in both the men's and women's draws.

The inaugural edition of the tournament will take place from July 6-13, 2025. It will mark the return of professional women's tennis to the Newport lawns for the first time in 35 years, since the Virginia Slims of Newport event concluded in 1990.

The 2024 Hall of Fame Open is currently underway at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, where six Americans have advanced to the quarterfinals—including Reilly Opelka, who is making a successful return from a nearly two-year injury layoff.

Now in its last year as an ATP 250, the tournament had been on the ATP Tour calendar since 1976. After 48 years as a tour-level event, the Hall of Fame Open will now evolve to showcase ATP Challenger Tour and WTA 125 action.
