Danielle Collins announces plans to play in 2025: 'I will be back'
Danielle Collins will be back for the 2025 season. The world No. 9 revealed Thursday night her plans to continue competing on the WTA Tour next year, changing course after her January announcement that she would retire at the conclusion of the current campaign.
Collins' initial decision was largely based on her health issues, including endometriosis and rheumatoid arthritis, and her desire to have children. After consulting with medical specialists, the 30-year-old's timeline has changed regarding what she called her "ultimate dream" of starting a family.
"While I was very excited and eager to wrap up my tennis career on a high note this year and jump headfirst into my next chapter of life, things have not gone as planned," Collins wrote on Instagram. "Dealing with endometriosis and fertility is a massive challenge for many women and something that I am actively traversing, but I am fully confident in the team I am working with. It is just going to take longer than I thought."
Collins' 2025 campaign will present an opportunity to build on a standout season that saw her return to the WTA's Top 10 behind back-to-back titles in Miami and Charleston. Her Miami run, in her home state of Florida, was one of the year's feel-good stories, with the St. Petersburg native winning 14 consecutive sets to claim the biggest trophy of her career in front of a hugely supportive South Florida crowd.

Her Miami and Charleston runs were part of a 15-match winning streak this spring, which she backed up with a semifinal showing at the Rome WTA 1000 and a runner-up finish in Strasbourg. Collins also competed at the Paris Olympics this summer, reaching the singles quarterfinals and the last 16 in doubles. She will once again represent the United States to begin her 2025 season, when she is slated to compete alongside Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz and her Olympic doubles partner Desirae Krawczyk at the United Cup.
Having hit a career-high WTA ranking of No. 7 behind her Australian Open final run in 2022, Collins moved as high as No. 8 this season and currently stands at world No. 9.
"The DANIMAL story has not reached its conclusion. I will be back on tour in 2025," she wrote. "While there are no guarantees in life, I hope to build on my 2024 momentum and keep playing until there is more certainty around my personal fertility journey. The only guarantee for now will be some more epic matches."
